BASIC SUBSTANCES IN THE EU
Basic Substances are active substances with a recognized general or specific effect against harmful agents that can affect plants, parts of plants or plant products used for food use. Among its main effects we can find basic substances with effect:
- Repellent
- Insecticide
- Fungicide
- Molluscicide
- Stimulator of natural defense mechanisms
- Attractive
- Disinfectant
The Basic Substances are regulated by REGULATION (EC) N. 1107/2009 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL concerning the marketing of plant protection products.
…a basic substance is an active substance which:
- is not a substance of concern; and
- does not have an inherent capacity to cause endocrine disrupting, neurotoxic or immunotoxic effects; and
- is not predominantly used for plant protection purposes but nevertheless is useful in plant protection either directly or in a product consisting of the substance and a simple diluent; and
- is not placed on the market as a plant protection product.”(..) an active substance that satisfies the criteria of a” food product “as defined in the article 2 of the Regulation (EC) no 178/2002 will be considered as a basic substance.
DO BASIC SUBSTANCES NEED REGISTRATION?
The products formulated exclusively with Basic Substances do not need to registerprior to use, as they are not considered as phytosanitary products, but they can only be usedby following the approved uses by European Commission.
HOW IS A BASIC SUBSTANCE APPROVED IN THE EU?
Basic Substances are approved by the European Commission upon request, this being the competent body for their approval and authorization of use throughout the EU for an indefinite period of time (Article 23).
CAN THEY BE USED IN ORGANIC FARMING?
Its use in organic farming is allowed for those Basic Substances that are considered as “food products” as defined in article 2 of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002, and have animal or vegetable origin, and their use is authorized only for the control of pests and diseases (use as herbicides is excluded).

NEW PRODUCT BASED ON NETTLE EXTRACT (URTICA DIOICA) URTIQINS

URTIQINS is a product obtained through a natural process of maceration and filtering of the Urtica dioica plant (CAS No. 84012-40-8) from which a natural extract is obtained. Approved as a Basic Substance against insects in accordance with Reg. 1107/2009.
URTIQINS is a foliar application product, its general dose being 300-400 cc per 100 liters of water, with a recommended volume of 400 L of water per hectare.
